Olympic Qualitying at Stake in St. Moritz

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland – Olympic qualification is on the line over the next four days (January 14-17) as bobsleigh and skeleton athletes compete in events at three tracks, including the annual stop at the Olympia Bobrun, the world’s only natural bob facility.  

The Intersport FIBT Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Cup will take the natural ice track for races Friday through Sunday. There are also races in Cesana, Italy (European Cup in all disciplines) and in Calgary, Canada (Intercontinental Cup Skeleton races).

Skeleton races start the St. Moritz World Cup with the men’s set for 8:45 CET and the women’s at 1 pm CET.  Two-man bobsleigh is set for Saturday at 10:00, followed by women’s bob at 1:45.  The four-man bobsleigh competition completes the weekend action on the 1722 meter track with the first heat planned for 10:00 CET.

The first phase of the Olympic qualification process ends Sunday, Jan. 17.  Based on FIBT rankings points, the 30 two-man and 30 four-man teams will be identified along with 30 men’s skeleton riders, 20 women’s skeleton athletes and 20 women’s bob teams.  If National Olympic Committees decide not to enter specific athletes, a reallocation process occurs that offer the positions to qualified teams.

For the first time in Olympic history up to three teams from the same nation can qualify for Olympic competition. Two nations will get three slots in women’s skeleton, while three nations will are slated to have three entries in men’s skeleton.  Front runners entering the final weekend of Olympic qualifying are Canada and Great Britain in women’s skeleton and Germany, Canada and the USA in men’s skeleton.

On the bobsleigh side, those leading in points to earn three entries are:
Women’s Bob: Germany and USA
2-Man Bob:  Germany, Switzerland and USA
4-Man Bob: Germany, Russia and the USA

World Cup leaders in all five disciplines entering the St. Moritz competitions are: Mellissa Hollingsworth of Canada (women’s skeleton),  Martins Dukurs of Latvia, women’s skeleton; Ivo Rueegg (Switzerland), 2-man bob;  Sandra Kiriasis of Germany, women’s bob; and Steven Holcomb of USA, 4-man bob.
