Huber Edges Szymkowiak in Skeleton WC Opener
WINTERBERG, Germany – Defending World Cup Champion Anja Huber of Germany overtook teammate Kerstin Szymkowiak of Germany to win the opening race of the Intersport FIBT Women’s Skeleton World Cup Friday morning. 

Mellisa Hollinsgworth of Canada won the bronze medal. Szymkowiak led by five hundredths over Huber after the first heat with a 58.75 clocking that set a track record.  Hollingsworth was in third, .28 seconds back with a 59.03. 

But it was Huber who prevailed with a better second run, posting a 58.92 and a two heat winning total of 1:57.72. Szymkowiak slipped to 58.99 with the final run of the competition, and that left her two hundredths short of victory in 1:57.74. 

"My hard training during the off season worked out today," said Huber. "I'm hoping to be more consistent this season."

Completing the top five were Hollingsworth, 1:58.38; defending World Cup Champion Katie Uhlaender of the USA, 1:58.60; and 2007 World Champion Noelle Pikus-Pace of the USA, 1:58.71.The Intersport FIBT women’s skeleton World Cup tour continues next Friday in Altenberg, Germany.
