FIBT congress in Sochi: positive balance and confident look into the future

Sochi (RWH)  The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation FIBT (Fédération Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing) has drawn an extremely positive balance after its annual conference in Sochi, Russia, and looks confidently into the future. “All this is done in keeping with the motto my 2010 election campaign was based on: ‘Sliding into the future’.  Based on the tradition which represents our solidity and strength, we move towards the future, towards new horizons where we may continue the history of our federation,” said FIBT President Ferriani in his speech to the delegates from 29 countries.

The conference awarded the 2016 bobsleigh and skeleton World Championships to Innsbruck-Igls after an outstanding presentation by the seven-man delegation led by Dr Andreas Lotz, president of the Austrian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (ÖBSV). The Austrian track hosted the 1964 and 1976 Olympic Winter Games and more recently the first ever Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012.

The organisers of Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 (KOR) presented the conference with information on the status of preparations at the venues for the next Winter Olympics. “The track [in Sochi] has interesting technical features which, together with the professionalism and passion of the organisers and friends of the Russian Federation, I’m certain will allow the world to witness a memorable edition of the Olympic Games”, said Ferriani. “Soon the baton will be passed on to our Korean friends. They too are willing to provide a great venue for all our disciplines. FIBT is ready to support this new Asian edition of the Games, which represents an absolutely extraordinary potential opportunity for the development of our disciplines.” At the conference, the delegates also approved comprehensive amendments to the FIBT rules and regulations in respect of materials and sport. They had already discussed these in depth during the pre-conference sessions.

In Sochi, Anders Huuse of Norway, Gjertan Kempers of the Netherlands and Luis Vázques of Puerto Rico were elected as the new internal auditors.
